(Nick is a surfer/snowskater/skater I met back in 2009 while he was living in Switzerland, he has since moved to China, here is a great email about his current unusual situation ... makes a good read, *hope your cool with a guest editor piece nick?)
Just heading back to LA on the 17th to get some quick surf and visit with family. I haven't had any sort of surfing or skiing experience here in China yet, but by this winter I should get a bunch.
Issues with surfing are mainly getting a board and getting some time to chase a swell. Like this hurricane that is bearing down on Shanghai and the coastline is most definitely going to leave some swell.
I scouted this island called Gongjiadao off of Yintan area. You can find it next to Rushan south of Weihai and north of Qingdao region. If you look at the satellite map you can see a possible pointbreak setup and then this island which has rocky outcroppings which catch some surf. I've got a Russian girlfriend with an apartment up there so I may try to check it out in the future.
My main problem is sourcing a surfboard. So I am trying to get a hold of a Catch Surf "Super One" which I can easily travel with and not worry about damaging. Also I want to get a good handplane. Can you make any by chance? And if you can how much?
In Shanghai I've gotten some skating in, but no real good pictures. The terrain for it is incredible for it and there's a really good skate scene here. With the world's largest skate park and endless street possibilities I'm having fun with it, but its just been too damn hot (over 90+ for 2 months) to do anything. Here's a cool video about skating shanghai.http://pitythecool.com/2011/china/shanghai-5-skateboarding-documentary/
