Dark and stormy

Someone rode the farm (lots of good local snow this year)

the above montage:

Rich feeling stressed about the chance of getting neg. by the lifty, but not today, all was good; the relaxing ride up, wide open groomers ... Awesome Sunday ... We even rode a vertical gondola, which is the easiest way up a mountain, everyone is unbuckled and walking... Crazy storm coming wens... Another snow/ rain event... Fingers are crossed for snow!!!

Surf and snow

.... late last night, a text from jeremy came in, describing his head high plus session ...perfect empty waves pouring into the point causing clean peeling walls...(rights)... It's funny at 37 degrees we still use the word "empty"... Bummed I missed it, but the snow was damn good too

(the surfline cam in the picture is pointed nowhere near the right places, luckily)

(ps anyone else surf regular but ride snow and concrete goofy?)

Max made the call

I was lucky to meet up with max today, he made the correct call: the back meadow would have all the powder after last nights storm and north winds ... And after a quick hike in, he was right... Our 10" of heavy wet snow had blown and drifted over the face and into the trees... It was max's first full session on a powdersurfboard, and he like jaytauk took to it naturally.. Super fun day, the highlight was watching max cut figure eights down an old jeep road/ glade

4" followed by hardcore sleet

It snowed so nicely today, then the Sleet came...it added a layer of weirdness to the road.. This guy was ok ... Calling for a quick burst of heavy snow tonight, 8-12" .. Fingers are crossed

Some snow

Picked up inch or two today, but things are getting iffy for this week, possible rain, turning to sleet and eventually to snow on the coast ...if the rain turns quickly to snow, we'll get about 8" on top of the remaining snow that was been building and receding since Xmas...but if it stays rainy to long we'll lose everything.., lucky the mountains are getting snow ... Rode a bideck in all sorts of conditions tonight (hardpack, crusty, and even a hair slushy) until
Pitch dark... Just in case it disappears

Wooden surfboard

...here's a nice pic of my brothers hollow wooden surfboard he's building ...stoked to surf it

Surfing in very cold water

This forecast got me thinking about the cold, because Sunday and Monday are gonna be cold.. Whenever the weather gets extreme something happens, 90% of the times it means some kind of surf, only 20% of that means good surf, usually it's huge, or messy or freezing... Sometimes it's good and freezing, or good, huge, and freezing... About ten yeArs ago it dumped 30" in a single night and winds cranked offshore, my brother and I grabbed a ride with a friend to a spot that could handle a swell this size... I remember there being so much snow, you could walk down the cliffs to the break... Needless to say the waves were stupid big.. Probably the biggest winter surf that was still on the surfable realm I've seen ... When u jump into 34 degree water at that size with 5 mil suit, gloves and booties there's a whole other element involved... after ten minutes of paddling out we all got separated, and I saw my brother scrape over a set into the horizon so far up the point and out to sea, it was mass card time...this was second time in past 5 years i thought i was going to break some bad news to our parents ;) ...the first time was just north of mahaka on the westside of Oahu, we didn't stand a chance that day, or this one... I might of caught 2 waves in two hours of feverish paddling , the third wave one shut down on me good, real good... Being held down and grabbing your leash just to figure out which way is up, completely sucks in the prettiest tropical setting, do it in water that is two degrees warm then an ice cube, and you are stressed!! .. .. But we all lived...this Tuesday could be one of those days... I'm praying for powder, and a life vest.. I got two more cold winter surf stories to go.. Share in comments if you have a good one .., peace

Jaytauk hiking up

Jaytauk joined me today for a powder surf, even tho powder is getting short, we made the most of it....funny, He's never snowboarded... And he's not worried about skateboarding, snowskating or ripping a thruster, but his surfing ability shone on the powderboard... He rode so well, considering how thin spots were and the steepness.... Never has panic in his arms or a stinkbug stance, dude flat out surfed it.. .. Well done brother!

Just before dark

Like to thank Max for taking most of these stills.. just before dark tonight... It was real cold, and the snow blew bare in spots, but it was very fun...wish I had more time!! ...even though the snow is quite deep enough anymore, I still rode the powderboard entirely .. it feels so much like surfing hard to stay off it

Couple shots from the past storm

Calling for a little more snow for sat.. And something weird for Tuesday... Lookout for the surf ... Lots of snowskating this week.. Fun conditions .. More pics to follow
