NY in the October issue of Powder??

I never like saying the word "backcountry" being from NY. People thinks it's a total joke, people look at me like I'm crazy. And after years of traveling around the country, I totally would agree with them; NY is not a top snow shredding destination. Sure it's cold in the winter and there's tons of lake effect storms, and a dozen or so coastal storms, but people think there's no real size, no big mountains, no deep powder. But just like every generalization there's always an exception. The Adirondack Mountains, are that exception in NY. The ADK is a huge remote state park that sits not far from sea level so every step is a vertical one and it's filled with the same stuff other big areas get to call backcountry, untracked remote dry powder, skiable huts, numerous avalanches, super long natural runs, skiable terrain until June, host to the Winter Olympics (twice, which is more then most states, which also says something about the area) and thanks to 'tug hill plateau', some crazy amounts of snow.(google Tug Hill if your curious) cool to see NY get the slight nod from Powder Magazine and I liked Drew Haas' feedback. Its not exactly worth buying a plane ticket for, but if u can make the drive, do it. Stoked to see it, even better come skate it

Powder Magazine's Adirondack Spread (NY)

This picture is a nice example of the winters in NY if your willing to hike a bit. This spot is about a 2 mile skin thru and up some perfect country. Even tho it feels so remote up there, its only about 7 miles away from the 90 meter ski jumps used in the 1980 and 1932 winter Olympics. 3 miles away from the jumps is the tiny olympic village of Lake Placid, where smack dab in the center of town is the Herb Brooks Rink, famous for housing the 'miracle on ice' where USA beat the Russians in hockey and eventually won gold medals!.. and standing across the rink and past the lake is Whiteface, which held all the Olympic downhill ski races! This area is steeped in alpine history, but is still way way off the radar.

(Real late spring) here's a shot of Mount Colden from Wright Peak, with Mt. Marcy in the background. My brother Steve in blue might be first to descend Wright Peak on snowskate, from summit(ish) to trailhead. On that day he rode a 125 FPS with 38" December deck from 2009.
