clip from sunday

Jeremy from december snowskates on Vimeo.

...we got Jeremy into snowskating this winter, he seemed taken with it right away, he even borrowed a set-up for a weekend trip on his second attempt at riding one.

here he is on sunday riding a FPS 125cm sub deck with 39" december top-deck almost three seasons old... the video is nice because you can get a pretty good glimpse of the bi-deck set-up... I like the way he gets the board back underneath him at 35-38 secs!! Jeremy's fourth time ever riding a snowskate

(the urgency) Sunday afternoon 3/27/11

Snow had been melting quickly... We had a small window of time, and we hoped alittle higher up conditions would be setting up for a session.... Luck was on our side. Perfect afternoon of bi-decking cream cheese... Heading further up into the state this weekend for a powder surf, snowskating and by default some peak bagging.. Plenty of winter left here.

Jeremy took these three photos and sent them to me.. Amazing how three simple pics can tell a story! Thanks for ride to the mountain and for pics!

Clean and glassy

The saw says it all

(email read) Hey Kevin. Two photos. One of Mamoun on a Costco (sawed off finless)
Jeremy and his son in HI last week

The fin doesn't fall off far from the tree

Check the stare

132's all mountain pow subs

Boydhill's newest sub is big, tapered, and design to ride in and out of pow from the groomers, or just stay in the backcountry..

Imagine standing at the top of a big resort with that sub and skate .. nothing binding your feet, and then dropping in, and heading anywhere ... Just coming in and out of feet of snow in total control!
I once asked bryce of Boydhill ..speed or carve? His Answer: "the best line on a snowskate is a straight line!"

100% sure the boydhill crew will be at hurricane ridge this weekend for the big open snowskate event.. They will have this sub there to demo.. And it will carve..

Aaron's tracks in colchester VT

Aaron sent me this pix of his neighbors backyard...these were a few of his first test runs he made on a december pow-skate on waning local conditions.. Luckily, his neck of woods is gonna get reloaded this week.. more to come..

Speaking of reloaded.. The mountains in CA. Are getting crazy amounts this week, so far over 48" in spots... That's gonna delay summer!!!

Even my coastal hell hole, is going to pick up plowable snow this week,.. Also calling for more snow next week.. These storms will really smack the local mountains adding to sweet base already.. What a spring!

Says alot

Predog's pow-sub

Jim @ predog sent me a pix of a new design he's working on, it's a Burton retrofitted to shred the pow as a sub on a snowskate... The swallowtail is so clean ...good looking. Today he relayed the message he sold two of them to the snowboard museum in salt lake city.. via salty peaks board shop!! He's stoked!

sidecut

...received a few pics from Kirk at FOAM and FUNCTION based in LA... They were sent to him from Australian surfboard shaper Mick Mackie.... If you surf you seen Mick's surfboards in Glass love and other Kidman movies.. If you don't surf, well he's a real good shaper.. But what always intrigued me about mackies is his ability to blend surfboard and snowboard designs... sidecut, flex, textured decks, etc... He's on his own path ....in addition I believe he's made a few bindingless pow surfboards too... I love this pic he took of the drop!!! If your interested in more, and live near Santa Cruz, CA.. You can stop by the Sacred Craft Show at the Rittenhouse today!!!... Kirk's there right now with a few of Mick's board.. And there's even a December powder surfer somewhere mixed in with all the surfboards...fun stuff ... Thanks Kirk!!

Back to the Surfre <-

120 cm maple powder surfer $150-

Finished this board awhile ago.. Had this idea even further back... A Spartan version of the powder board... no ptex, no channels, no edges... Just a heavy handed clear coat on all sides.. I've ridden one like this last season , and after hand rubbing wax into it, it went really well ... Great way to start hitting the powder strapless... Maple, poly, and custom Eva grip...$150.00

Don't head into the backcountry without one

Powder surfing

When I took this picture of a friend riding one of the pow sticks... I asked him to come close to me, so I could get a good shot of the board.. He had to traverse a bony wind scoured section to reach me... just before dipping down into a nice powdery bowly section..
Any mere mortal would have slid out on the traverse but not him, after a bunch of years surfing liddles he knows how to use his edge without pressure... Nothing in this group of photos translated into a useful post.. Snow looks washed out, can't see the board, and slope looks flat.. Useless.. until you see his smile....pow boards are a trip to ride.. I blew the photo, but he made the section.. And disappeared out of my cell video zoom ....was a really nice run... Lots of stuff going on in the powder surfing world over here. Getting emails weekly of DIYers giving it a go! My blacktip board is at smugglers notch, VT getting demo'd by A.D., and some more good news coming from a father son kayak builder in BC, Canada .... And Kirk from foam and function is bringing a squashtail pow board to Sacred Craft Show in Santa Cruz CA. (surfboard trade show)... He's gonna have it on display with some amazing boards he's involve with..super stoked... Looking foward to hearing feedback from all those venues...

"where do you sit?"

Is the strangest question I have gotten waiting for a chair lift...my answer was "it's like a skateboard", and he said, "I know, but where do you sit?"

I guess bi-deck snowskates are alittle strange!! This pic is from bryce, it's a complete he put together with his new sub, and the 34.5" top-deck we just sent out... He said it sold to a Idaho smokejumper!!... The dog is definitely stoked ...matter of fact he's demonstrating how you stand on it... Don't sit...

Days are getting longer... Water still cold here but surf has been up !! Mt. Baker is getting crushed from what I heard .. Hope everyone is getting some good snowskating in
